AI as a Content Writing Service: Are Writing Jobs Going Away?

There are two wonderful sites I read this week on AI updates with regards to writers. There are many reasons why AI won’t replace you as a skilled writer. Its lack of updated information for one, and another is style and voice; this is too personalised and while brand voices can be analysed by AI, it can’t ever be YOU.

There will be a growing need for both freelance and staff writers to become AI-assisted writers, particularly on commercial projects like affiliate guides, newsletters, white papers and blogs. But YOU and your style and voice and personality will always be a part of the process.

There are two posts this week on MBN Market News and ZDNET to have a read through as they address quick points on this AI replacing human writers topic as well as why AI-assisted jobs is the future and not AI-controlled jobs for writers.

Why Do Freelance Writers Get Paid More Per Project?

Understanding the Factors Behind Higher Freelance Rates

Freelance writing has become a popular career choice for many aspiring writers. One of the key benefits of freelancing is the potential to earn more per project in comparison to traditional employment. In this article, we will explore the reasons behind the higher rates often seen in freelance writing jobs.

1. Is it better to be a freelancer or an employee?

  • Flexibility: Freelancers have the freedom to choose their own projects and work schedule.

  • Independence: They can work from anywhere and enjoy a greater sense of control over their career.

  • Opportunity for higher income: Freelancers have the potential to earn more per project, making it an appealing choice for many.

2. Why are freelance rates usually higher?

  • Overhead costs: Freelancers are responsible for their own expenses such as equipment, software, and taxes.

  • Self-employment benefits: Freelancers lack access to employer-sponsored benefits like health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.

  • Increased risk: Freelancers face business uncertainties, periods without projects, and the need to manage self-employment taxes.

  • Demand and market value: The freelance market is highly competitive, with clients often willing to pay more for experienced writers who can deliver high-quality work.

3. Why do freelancers charge so much?

  • Specialised skills: Freelancers often possess extensive knowledge and specialisation in specific niches or industries, enabling them to demand higher rates.

  • Scarcity: Experienced freelancers with a successful track record can be in high demand, creating a scarcity factor that drives up rates.

  • Client acquisition costs: Freelancers must invest time and resources in marketing, networking, and building their client base, which justifies charging higher rates.

  • Professionalism and accountability: Freelancers are expected to provide a professional level of service, meet deadlines, and maintain excellent communication with clients, factors that contribute to higher rates.

4. Where are the higher paid freelance jobs for writers?

  • Specialised industries: Certain sectors, such as technology, finance, health, and legal, often require specialised writing expertise and are willing to pay a premium for it.

  • Content marketing agencies: Many agencies offer higher rates for freelance writers due to their demand for high-quality content to attract and engage audiences.

  • Corporate clients: Large companies and organisations often have larger budgets and require professional freelance writers to handle their content needs.

  • Niche markets and publications: Writing for niche markets, specific publications, or industry journals can offer higher rates due to the specialised nature of the content.

Freelance writers often earn more per project compared to traditional employment due to various factors. While the freelancing world comes with its own challenges, the higher rates serve as compensation for the risks and expenses that freelancers undertake.

Best advice for charging higher rates: Target specialised industries, content agencies, corporate clients, and niche markets that fit your skill sets or interests. If you understand legal advice and have a professional background, it makes sense to approach law firms and ask if they need a writer for emails, blogs, ads and guides. If you love reviewing movies, ask the many top review sites if they need more feature content if you have interesting angles.

In past newsletters, I’ve mentioned why freelance writers can access higher paid opportunities and build a successful and rewarding freelance career. No time like the present if you want to work for yourself as opposed to being a staff writer.
