Why AI Will Create MORE Writing Jobs Rather Than Take Them Away
There has been a lot of buzz surrounding artificial intelligence's (AI) impact on the job market, with many people fearing that it will lead to significant job losses. The writing industry is no exception, with concerns that AI will replace human writers and render writing jobs obsolete.
The latest AI summit raised alarm bells but no real solutions. Surely, our interests should be in how AI works with writers as well as how it goes against many jobs. The latest scaremongering across social media is largely unfounded claiming “we are already obsolete”. However, this is not necessarily the case.
In fact, such claims are absurd.
In this article, we will explore why AI will create more writing jobs rather than take them away.
More Content, More Opportunities
As AI continues to develop, it is becoming increasingly sophisticated in its ability to generate automated content, such as news articles and product descriptions.
Does this not mean that human writers will become redundant?
In fact, this growing demand for content means that there will be even more opportunities for subject matter expert writers as they will be needed to apply creativity, personality, and originality to make this automated content more engaging for readers.
Think about it.
Has an AI actually used that new vacuum cleaner in the review post? Has AI tested that new sports car and driven it? Has AI seen that epic movie and able to review it?
Nope.
Only you can do that.
There is a case here that AI will create opportunities for human writers to add value to automated content, rather than replace them. Why?
It will be the eventuality that the “AI-Assisted” writer will be involved on most commercial projects to some extent. But not taking away the personality and experiences that only a human can share.
I’ve recently had to cut through AI pitches on HARO. Easy to spot. No real warm input that separates the pitch from a generic mail shoot. Blogs are the same as are ebooks. The human touch makes a big difference to how the content is read and absorbed.
AI Will Make Writing Easier, Not Obsolete
One of the most attractive features of AI is its ability to automate repetitive tasks. In the writing industry, this can mean automated copy-editing and fact-checking. This technology means that writers can focus more on the creative aspects of writing, such as ideation, research, and storytelling, allowing them to produce higher-quality content.
Therefore, while AI may take on more mundane writing tasks, it will make more space for writers to do what they do best.
The Need For Specialised Skillsets
AI technology needs to be programmed and trained by human experts. Yep, it’s a machine. It needs us to keep it running and developing. Yeah, yeah, I’ve seen the Terminator films but let’s stick to how AI affects writers—what we know about AI’s limits and abilities for writers, how it transcends content creation.
New types of jobs have emerged to fill this need for specialised skills. This will continue as AI speeds up content for brand content campaigns, and through magazines and blogs. Someone has to manage that content, give it some heart, give it credibility. That’s a human job.
For example, companies might require specialised writers who are able to teach AI how to write more naturally or create datasets for machine learning algorithms.
AI continues to grow and evolve. We have to evolve with it. That creates jobs.
This technology will likely automate repetitive writing tasks, offering writers more time and space to focus on the creative aspects of writing. ProWritingAid for example gets smarter and smarter at being a proof reader. Its latest rewrite ability is helping to guide writers when learning how to adapt to known styles.
The ever growing demand for content will create more opportunities for writers who can add value to automated content. As such, AI is shaping to become a powerful tool that enhances human creativity in writers rather than replacing it. The choice to use AI is up to you.
So, We All Should Use AI As Writers And Never Write Again? Right?
Wrong. Very wrong. As long as you write the article and not the AI, you’ll grow as a writer. You’ve missed my point on it being only your helpful assistant for projects if you believe that.
But let’s look at an example. So, your latest project wants to follow a brief and write up a 2000 word blog post on a topic. A good approach is to use AI to help you craft content outlines so you have a planned flow for your sub-headings. It can even help with sources for your research. From there, you need to be the writer and craft that article and much quicker than usual now you have a solid outline. When doing this, use Google’s ‘people also ask’ section and Answer The Public to create headings that guide the content. Don’t rely on AI creating your blog outline, 100%.
You can use AI to help guide content for your headings but use the information as a guide to your final personally written piece.
