You Gotta Be S******g Me!!

Seen too many write for us pages lately that pay peanuts and demand quality. Are you stuck in these types of work as you struggle to find long term work?

When I started out, I accepted anything and everything just to pay the bills. Go on, exploit me! That was my approach when I snapped up $10 for an article or even $5 for an article writing job back in 2007 to 2010.

I worked like a slave on those. One content mill to the next until I realised that this approach was going nowhere.

And neither was my bank account.

I’m calling this one out as an example. You should know by now that I like to name and shame any company disrespecting writers with low rates. I don’t believe for a second that $10 is the maximum they can afford and actually justify starting at….drum roll…

$2.5

*Jaw drops*

Here it is: https://www.remarkme.com/write-for-us/

If a site is serious about the quality of their content and how they present their tone of voice, rates will be at least $50 to $100 an article for niches like SEO or money tips or lifestyle.

If you see these offers, do yourself a long-term favour and skip on by. Better rates exist as you are better than those bottom of the pile rates.

Sites that Help Freelancers

It's a good idea if you have no work right now to try out the 3 sites which helped me the most when my chips were down. Though do this while working on connecting with brands in your area of writing expertise. Place most of your focus on finding clients directly.

But, if in a bit of an income gap, try the top 3 sites for freelance work.

  1. Upwork: One of the largest and most well-known platforms for freelancers.

  2. Freelancer: Similar to Upwork, Freelancer offers a large pool of freelance writing jobs.

  3. Fiverr: Offers a great opportunity to build a portfolio and establish a reputation.

I actually managed to get a lot of content orders out of Fiverr back in the early 2010s. I've read that many writers still manage today, so try it out.

A little on AI, No It Won’t Take Your Job If You’re Skilled

And don’t worry about AI taking the jobs. Companies who care about their work quality won’t depend on AI. Reputable brands want genuine writers to learn about their brand’s voice. Most writing jobs need a conversational writer and ways to convince the reader to trust in the words.

Google’s E-A-T guidelines list the new standards for content written on web sites. If you are new to the guidelines, have a read, it’s crucial reading.

Brands want something that a human writer, through personality and experience, can bring to their brand voice. AI is not quite grasping the flow of the right tone, at least not in my extensive tests. Some writers have argued with me about this on LinkedIn. Yet when I looked at their samples, I could see the fluffy verbose and lack of pace quite clearly.

Not to mention the bad repetition of words. Facts were really off the mark in a few articles I looked at too.

I noticed Fiverr has implemented a dedicated AI section for writers who use AI to assist their work. So if you use AI, there is still work.

But...

I am not encouraging its use. If it helps make you a better writer as opposed to just churning AI content, great. Don’t let it do more than a first draft. Clients have style guides and TOVs (Tone Of Voice) guides you have to follow. AI won’t help here. Send them AI generated content with no proofing, no fact checks, no attention to their style guides and I’ll make this outcome simple.

You’ll lose the job.

Make sure you aim to be a better writer and strive to get that professional edge on the market.
